As most of us have just now seen the incredible work at updating Storm's 90s costume, I felt it necessary to post a compilation of notes and images to help with the eventual VU of Storm's original outfit.
@TheDink @Asros (Hoping I made correct tags for the team. If I've tagged someone who wouldn't benefit from any of this, I do apologize. )
As a reminder, here's what we've got in game:
Hair:
Storm's inception in 1975 displayed her with very long, very flowy hair that draped down to her rear
It's also worth noting that Storm's hair had a "Barbarella-bump" as I like to call it, with a lot of extra fluff extending above her headdress:
LOW Heeled Thigh Boots:
There's no debate on this one. Even in her original concept art by Dave Cockrum (see image above), Storm has heels on those boots. I could even take pics of frames from the books in which this costume was first featured and you'll find her in a low heeled boot. They're a low, very functional heel for her uses, but they're heels none the less, and should not be wedges, if this can be avoided.
Storm's Scalloped Cape:
Though I realize this may be an element that may go unchanged, as the other VUs have despite outcry for an accurate depiction of it. Storm's cape is scalloped at the sides and in her original depictions even drapes over most of her arms when idle or in flight. In her original concept art by Cockrum (see above) the artist notes that her cape is more like a poncho, draping over her arms and connecting at four points. It should also be noted that the portion of the cape attached to the brooch/bust should extend further down the bust than the current in game model. The cape's length does look short in the initial concept art by Cockrum, however in comic frame depictions of it the cape is quite long. I think a lot of us would agree that it looks best long.
Storm's Large Ruby:
The brooch that Storm sports in this costume was much larger in the original artwork than in the model we have in game. If I remember correctly this gem stone was important to Storm, though I can't exactly remember why x_x Overall though, if this stone could be enlarged to match the concept art, that'd be a plus.
Storm's Two Piece Body Suit:
The main criticism I have towards the in game model for this is that the lower portion of Storm's two piece outfit should be slightly larger and a bit higher. I feel I should note here, as I did above in my notes about the cape that the portion of the cape that connects to the ruby/bust should be lower and extend further down her bust, covering a good bit of her upper body. You really don't see much of the upper area of the body suit in the comics.
Materials:
Most of her comic representation in this costume seems to have a semi-matte look to it as far as her body suit goes. Her boots and two piece seem to reflect a bit more light than her cape, which is mainly matte. The gold/yellow trim in all designated areas is also a must, and could possibly look stunning if it reflected light.
What's most important about this costume? In my opinion, getting the hair and the cape just right are of the utmost importance. If noone is willing to bend to give her the canonical footwear she has, it's semi-negligible. In order for this one to stand out from the other outfits she has, her hair and cape should be on point. If the cape cannot be correctly scalloped at the sides, then I feel that at least the portion connecting to the ruby/bust should be lowered and that the cape should cover more of her upper body (along with a larger ruby) as it does in the imagery above. As for her hair, it should be longer than it has been made for her other in game costumes and given the "bump" at the top, and extend at least to her rear, or close to it. If these few things can be taken into account then I feel the rest will fall into place.
